Southside Community Land Trust’s 28th Annual Rare & Unusual Plant Sale 2020

May 11, 2020 May 21, 2020

The format will be very different this year, but the familiar variety of great plants will be the same. Your purchases will also continue to support our work to expand Rhode Islanders’ access to affordable, healthy food.

Here’s how the Plant Sale will work: customers will order and prepay their plants online in mid-May, scheduling a time to pick them up curbside, “grab and go” style, from Sat., May 16 through Fri., May 22. To simplify the process, the online inventory will feature general categories, for example, “hot peppers,” which will mean you may get one of several varieties of hot peppers. For large quantities of popular varieties that we can easily organize at the Farm, we will list specific varieties.

Also this year, to enable everyone who wants to grow food to do so, we will donate 2-3,000 plant starts to local gardeners in need. Plant Sale customers will be invited to help us defray this cost by making a donation online along with purchases.

Finally, in keeping with a favorite SCLT member benefit, if you have signed up or renewed your membership before the Sale, you’ll have early access to online ordering. (Announcement to come.)

Plant Sale details will be announced in the weeks ahead, but here are the basic timeline:

May 11: online ordering opens for SCLT members
May 12: online ordering opens to the public
May 16-21: prepaid, curbside pickup at City Farm

Right now, Farm staff are in the greenhouse seeding thousands of your favorite vegetable, herb and fruit starts to be ready for the Sale. We will all miss the special experience of plant shopping inside City Farm to the sounds of live musicians, but we are delighted to be able to provide you with fabulous plants this year under pandemic circumstances. Know that we will eagerly resume our beloved Plant Sale traditions and face-to-face interactions in 2021.
